This is a genuine damascene brooch dating to the Edwardian period, c1901.  Damascene, the technique of inlaying tiny wires of precious metal into other metal, originated in Damascus - hence the name.

The technique was taken up around the world with big centers for it in Toledo in Spain as well as the Far East.  Toledo was a huge metal producing part of Spain and their damascene work became known as Toledoware.

They may have produced fine work in the early years but for at least the last fifty years have produced ‘tourist quality’ work which is of a very poor standard indeed.

This brooch is not Toledoware, which can usually be quickly spotted by the way the central plate is hooked very cheaply onto an even cheaper back with pin.
